Tea-Dyed Easter Eggs
Try this simple method to dye Easter eggs naturally with tea, minimizing food waste and contact with pesky chemical dyes.
I remember decorating eggs down at the local library as a kid. While I don’t recall what dyes were used, I do remember that they’d take about a week to work out of the finger tips. It was a fun experience drawing on the eggs with wax crayons and dipping them into the dyes to create a unique decoration to bring home.
One of the biggest shames about egg decoration is the waste of food it causes, which is why decorating with all natural, edible ingredients ensures the egg itself won’t be lost. Make these eggs the night before Easter to add a bit of magic to the post-egg hunt brunch, either a big pot of one colour or a nice variety will be undoubtedly enjoyed and appreciated. If you’re vegan try tea dying sticky rice overnight (without the vinegar) and steam it to make egg shaped sticky rice balls instead.
INGREDIENTS
- Eggs (hardboiled)
- Vinegar
- 6 cups or glasses
- Water
- 1-2 teaspoons Numi Matcha (use more for a brighter green)

- 1 teabag Numi Rooibos
- 1 teabag Numi Breakfast Blend
- 1 teabag Numi Turmeric Golden Tonic
DIRECTIONS
- Bring a big pot of water to boil and boil the eggs for 10 minutes. This works best if the eggs are room temperature and a few days old.
- Add one tea bag to each pot and let it seep for 30 minutes.
- Remove the tea bags and add 1-2 teaspoons of vinegar to each one.
- Add one boiled egg to each cup.
- Leave the eggs overnight.
- Carefully remove and wipe with a towel.
- Decorate your house or serve them to eat! The taste of the egg inside is not altered by the tea.
