Most teas on store shelves are blended or sprayed with “natural” or artificial flavorings or fragrances for flavor. “Natural” flavoring results in a strong perfumey and cloying after-taste that masks the true taste of tea. This is often done to cover up poor quality tea & cut costs.
Natural and artificial flavors are made by “flavorists” in a laboratory by extracting either “natural” or “synthetic” chemicals to create flavorings. According to FDA Code, the definition for Natural flavor is: the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material… whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional” (21CFR101.22).
